Rebecca Whittemore is a visual artist based in Adelaide, Australia. Her current work focuses on food waste, what we throw away, overlook or allow to rot, and asks what these remnants might reveal about our values, habits and cultural priorities.
Her ongoing series What the Kitchen Forgets draws attention to domestic food waste as both subject and material. Working primarily with photomedia, Rebecca scans and photographs scraps, peels and other food remnants, often items on the edge of decomposition. By isolating and presenting these fragments with care and clarity, she invites viewers to see what is usually discarded in a new light.
This practice sits at the intersection of environmental concern, domestic labour and quiet observation. It reflects Rebecca’s broader interest in sustainability and the politics of everyday life, particularly the spaces and routines that are often undervalued.
Rebecca holds an MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) and has exhibited nationally and internationally. She was a finalist in the Gallery M Contemporary Art Prize in both 2023 and 2024 and has received recognition through awards such as the Latent Image Award, the Atkins Photographic Award and the Josephine Ulrick & Win Schubert Photography Award.
